European School of Management and Technology (ESMT)

Berlin/2003 – 2006

The State Council of the former German Democratic Republic was nominally the country’s highest-ranking political body. The building that housed the council (Staatsratsgebäude) was erected between 1962 and 1964 at Berlin’s Schlossplatz. After German reunification, it provisionally served as the Federal German Chancellery. The structure was classified as a historic monument in 1993. It is now completely renovated and home to the learning centre of the European School of Management and Technology (ESMT). To fulfil the needs of a modern university, significant renovation and conversion work was required. During the transformation of the building, rooms with particular historical value were preserved. All other areas have been redesigned or converted with the emphasis on retaining the original character wherever possible.
